The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice Essay - 1142 Words
A talented poet and playwright writer, William Shakespeare came during the golden age of England. His writings are the greatest in the English language. No one really know Shakespeare real birthday. The closet date the scholars can come up is on his baptism on April 24th, 1564. It has been over 400 years since his death; Shakespeareââ¬â¢s writing is not just limited to English scholars, but also appears on modern historical events and newspaper as well. Playwright and poetry are an art that appeals to the conscious mind, but the best classical playwright such as Othello not only appeals to conscious mind, but also to the subconscious mind. ââ¬Å"The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice,â⬠written by William Shakespeare from the sixteenthâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Shakespeare takes this classic theory and idea from Aristotle, a mentor that he has met earlier in his writing career. Shakespeare creates Desdemona, a daughter of a Venetian senator marries Othello a hig h military ranking back then. Their marriage might have lasted had it not been interfered by one fictional evil character Iago. Iago blames on Cassio and Othello for seducing his wife, Emilia. Another reason Iago is jealous is because Othello has proven his military skills and knowledge to the people of Venice and is given a high rank General for his strength and loyalty (Newton, 3, 5). Shakespeare does not label his characters, but rather gives them the freedom. This explains why playwrights such as The Tragedy of Othello are a good example of a tragic event and an excellent example for ââ¬Å"Renaissance humanism. It is through freedom that allows Shakespeare to create each of his character with unique personalities. The Tragedy of Othello is a theme of deceitful; Where Iago deceives many of the characters in the play. The focus of Othello is the center on the love relationship between Othello and his wife. Is Torture Ever Acceptable Essay Example For Students
Is Torture Ever Acceptable? Essay I do not believe in torture and consider it something barbaric and inhuman. Therefore I would say that torture is never acceptable under any circumstances, and regardless of what the consequences might be. Torture and civilization do not mix because the latter highly emphasizes the value of human beings as it is something intrinsic. Democracy also does not mix with torture because democratic societies believe in human rights and equality. My point is that the end does not justify the means when it comes to the torture of a human being. September 11, 2001 was a turning point in not only the history of the United States but also the history of the world. It has put the commitment of the civilized world with human rights into test. After the occurrence of fatal attack, there were loud voices that tried to legalize torture as an acceptable means in interrogating suspects. Torture can be defined as, ââ¬Å"the officially sanctioned infliction of intense suffering, aimed at forcing someone to do or say something against his or her will. â⬠(Rodley, N. S. The Treatment of Prisoners Under International Lawââ¬â¢ (2nd edition) (Oxford University Press, 2000(. Although I have to admit that torture has been used on large-scale in different parts of the world to obtain confessions from suspects, morally speaking, torture is not an acceptable procedure under any circumstances. In this essay, I shall shed light on two arguments to answer a very critical question, is torture ever acceptable? I will weigh two points of view regarding this argument, the consequentialists and the deontologists. Then decide if I still stand on my position or are there truly exceptions to torture. Suppose that some authorities know for sure that someone positively knows the location of a bomb that will explode to kill tens of people and that person refuses to voluntarily identify the place of the bomb, would it be acceptable to torture that person to extract information and save the lives of innocent people. In fact, this scenario puts us before very critical choices and makes us weigh the torture of one person against the life of tens of people. However, there are two basic arguments about this issue I am going to talk about. The first argument considers that we can use torture as the last resort. Consequentialists, who hold the first argument, consider that no action is bad in itself. According to them, morality of actions is determined by their consequences. Thus, in the above mentioned scenario the goodâ⬠(saving innocent people) must be weighed up against ââ¬Å"the badâ⬠(torturing the suspect) in order to make a decision on the correct course of action. The second argument considers that torture is not acceptable under any circumstances and regardless what the consequences might be. Deontologists, who hold this argument, consider that torture cannot be justified because the acceptance of any form of torture as an effective means to extract information from suspects, would universalize and legalize torture. The act of torture is wrong because torturing a person for information is to use them as a means to exploit them. Personally, I think that the ââ¬Å"ticking bombâ⬠scenario is very narrow and is deceptively used to legalize torture as an acceptable means of eliciting information from suspects in critical situations. There are several considerations that should be taken into account before trying to legalize the act of torture; the scenario of the ââ¬Å"ticking bombâ⬠can be challenged and rests only on assumptions. Exceptions will pave the way before the wide implementation of torture in different parts of the world and in very different situations that might include personal interests. .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82 , .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82 .postImageUrl , .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82 , .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82:hover , .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82:visited , .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82:active { border:0!important; } .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82:active , .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82 .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u9f80b7822511c283aadc3b0fb2a35f82:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Coke vs. Pepsi: Fighting for Foreign Markets Novem EssayWe are opening the way of tyrant governments to use torture against their subjects for political purposes that potentially have nothing to do with saving peoples lives as supposed by the ââ¬Å"ticking bomb scenario. Therefore, I am still against torture and a firm believer that it is never acceptable.

The Definition of Art Essay Example For Students
The Definition of Art Essay There is art in every aspect of life. People have the ability to create art by using their imaginations and creativity. It is intertwined with passion, culture and meaning. Art is a term used to label things that society has decided can be beautiful for people art will always be a never ending evolution that will continue to get more and more innovative. When art is accepted by the community it becomes more powerful. The Heights is a broadway musical that tells the stories of a variety of characters living in Washington Heights. The writer, Lin Manuel Miranda focused on his life and community to shows how each person has a different background, tradition and story. He began brainstorming ââ¬Å"At first It was I want to write a kind musical that I would want to be in a lightbulb really went off and I was like, ââ¬ËOhââ¬â¢ you can write a musical about you, about your lifeâ⬠(Miranda). Miranda was very passionate about creating a piece that connected to a community. We will write a custom essay on The Definition of Art specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now He created a musical based on his life including the people around him and what they did. Miranda used this piece of art to inform others of how the everyday lives of people can be considered art. The play writer used his daily life and created it into an art piece. Even though it was just a play about a typical neighborhood in New York City, people considered this art because of the sense of community. In the Dominican culture, ââ¬Å"Palosâ⬠is sacred music that worship saints and death. Palos have two forms of art Palo music and Palo dancing. Each Saint like ââ¬Å"San Miguel Archangelâ⬠(Saint Michael) and ââ¬Å"Santa Marta la Dominadoraâ⬠(Saint Martha the Dominator) has itââ¬â¢s own palo song that represents them. ââ¬Å"These drums are played for saintsââ¬â¢ festivals or cofradias It is said during the death ritual dances that the spirit of the dead person will enter an heir and danceâ⬠(Keys). As creepy as this may sound some Dominicans dance palos to receive the spirit of a dead ancestor or a saint. In their culture this is considered a form of art because throughout the years, they have passed on the music, dances and beliefs through generations. The culture behind this art is very powerful and even though people find it different they still see the beauty of this art. This shows how even religion plays a role in art. The American flag is the symbol for the nations strength and unity. Betsy Ross and a few others were the first people to make the flag, they designed it so that each symbol has a meaning. Is the flag a painting or a flag, or both? Flag does not conclusively answer that question; instead, like so many of Johnsââ¬â¢s creations it establishes a line of inquiry and asserts its significance for the practice and history of artâ⬠(Johns). Even though the flag is just a flag, it is also art because of the details portrayed on it. Most Americans citizens accepted the flag because each color, stripe and star has its own meaning or history. Many see this piece of art as something that has great importance because they feel defined as a citizen. Certainly, art is not only an object, but it could have an impact to the viewers. Overall, earth revolves around art. Art is more powerful when there is passion, meaning and culture to it. The different pieces of art such as dances, music and other art to represent a significant meaning has really broaden itself. Art has become the foundation of the earth because it can be very controversial, some may be pleased while others are disappointed. Certainly art is going to continue to have an influence within the world around us if people accept it.

Impacts of Energy Consumption free essay sample
Coming home from a long day at school, I tell myself, ââ¬Å"Damn, Iââ¬â¢m tired! â⬠On top of that, itââ¬â¢s blazing hot outside, so I set my thermostat to the lowest possible temperature so that my apartment can cool down quickly. After I adjust the temperature, I go to the bathroom and then leave the lights on from laziness. Finally, I turn on the television to watch something until I fall fast asleep. The end of the month comes along and I walk to my mailbox to check for any bills and next thing you know I have a staggering bill from Georgia Power! Itââ¬â¢s nothing that I should be surprised about because I have ridiculous habits when it comes to leaving things on and setting my thermostat. Iââ¬â¢m pretty sure Iââ¬â¢m not the only person with an energy-consuming problem. I know that millions of people do the same things I do. We will write a custom essay sample on Impacts of Energy Consumption or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Reducing my energy consumption is a challenge that I want to take on to better myself and the environment, which is a change for the good that i have great interest in. I looked at my energy bill for the past month and I did some calculations money wise. When looked over some energy facts on the Energy Star site, it made me realize something. According to Energy Star, the government agency that helps us all save money on energy and protect the environment at the same time, the air conditioning unit consists of approximately 50% of your monthly electric bill (ââ¬Å"Save Energy at Homeâ⬠). Last month, my bill came up to $70. 71, which is high for me because I donââ¬â¢t really run anything in my apartment but T. V, lights, internet, and my laptop. I barely use my stove or microwave because Iââ¬â¢m one of those college students who eats out all the time because I canââ¬â¢t cook. Half of $70 is $35. On top of that, the unit can possibly use more than fifty percent if you donââ¬â¢t maintain it properly. Sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20 percent and sometimes much more (ââ¬Å"Save Energy at Homeâ⬠). That being said, it would use less energy and cost less. Energy Star also says that leaving things plugged in even when they are not using it, can consume energy. It does indeed show a difference if you practice leaving things that you donââ¬â¢t use unplugged (ââ¬Å"Save Energy at Homeâ⬠). It saved me around 50 kWh which doesnââ¬â¢t seem like much but itââ¬â¢s something. Next, since an HVAC unit can possibly take over your energy costs, we should all know how to reduce our consumption when it comes to the HVAC unit itself. Installing a programmable thermostat can help your HVAC system become more energy efficient (ââ¬Å"Energy Saving Tipsâ⬠). I was reading a article from the ConsumerMan section of MSNBC and came across an article stating that installing a programmable thermostat can cut your energy costs by 20% (Weisbaum). These systems that we cherish so much can also be sources of emission into the environment we inhabit. It is said that HVAC systems can be contaminant emission sources (Batterman). Have you ever left some food laying around and come to realize that it starting growing mold? The EPA conducted a few studies that shown that the HVAC systems are the causes of biological growth, and moisture of which molds use to multiply and grow (Batterman). Therefore, it would probably be a good idea to use programmable thermostats to lower costs and emissions into the indoor environment. These thermostats can minimize the emissions when we are not at home or sleep. Aside from the costs of using the infamous HVAC units that we all cherish so much, the environmental changes is something that goes on unnoticed to people including myself. I think that itââ¬â¢s something that we should consider because of a number of reasons. Energy generation impacts our environment in a way that we donââ¬â¢t see. Most of the energy that we use is produced by power plants that use non-renewable resources such as natural gas, oil, and coil, all of which are considered as fossil fuels. ââ¬Å"Fossil Fuelsâ⬠) Fossil Fuels account for 83% of the Unites States energy consumption (ââ¬Å"Fossil Fuelsâ⬠). All of these fuels can release harmful things like carbon dioxide, which is a dangerous greenhouse gas (ââ¬Å"Fossil Fuelsâ⬠). Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere by agricultural practices and by the burning of fossil fuels (Michaels 5). According to many people and scientists, they believe that this is what may be causing global warming. Another energy generating method is Nuclear power plants. This, in my opinion, is the most harmful way to produce energy. When nuclear plants are producing energy, they are rapidly changing the temperature, which also increases evaporation. This then increases rainfall, which can affect agriculture with a lack of good soil (ââ¬Å"Fossil Fuelsâ⬠). The environmental concern of nuclear energy production comes from the disposal of nuclear waste. Spillage and leakage of nuclear radiation into the environment can cause people to develop cancer if they inhale these gases (ââ¬Å"Fossil Fuelsâ⬠). That being said, I feel as if when I use too much energy at home and in other places, I cause the releases of these harmful gases my elf. Environmental Impact of Power Generation explains that 39% percent of the energy generated today is used to make more energy (Hester 15). So this book argues that consumption is, in fact, an important factor of a consumerââ¬â¢s environmental footprint. All forms of electric generation can have some type of environmental impact in the world (Hester 17). For example, hydr oelectric power plants may not have any impact on the air, but to construct these dams can significantly affect our natural river systems as well as the wildlife that inhabits these rivers (Wittwers 25). What about coal? When coal is used to generate power, things like carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides are released into the atmosphere (Rowland 35). The Environmental Protection Agency requires that the burners of these particular plants have control devices aimed at reducing the amount of emissions that are released. I looked up carbon dioxide in the dictionary just to have an idea of why exactly is it related to global warming. It is said that it is a greenhouse gas that affects the earthââ¬â¢s radiated balance, which also means that it is directly related to global warming. Another way to think about the greenhouse effect is to consider that according to physics the radiation we receive from the Sun must be equally balanced by the heat Earth radiates out to space. If we were to give back less energy than we receive, our planet would soon be too hot for life. â⬠(ââ¬Å"The Greenhouse Effectâ⬠) According to the research that I conducted, it is like a chain reaction. We use too much energy at home, the power plants produce more energy for our high demands, and next thing you know we humans are causing global warming. For the past couple of months, I have been getting significantly high electricity bills and I wanted to know exactly what it is that i have been doing to get such high bills when the only things i constantly run in my two bedroom apartment is: one television, a wireless router, a MacBook, and of-course, my HVAC unit. I learned that the problems are exactly what I just said, ââ¬Å"I constantly run. â⬠Not only that, according to online source, your HVAC unit consumes the most electricity in any household that contains one. I decided to do a project to see what I can do to help lower my energy costs as well as have a lesser impact on the environment. I looked over my Georgia Power bill and I apparently consumed 532 kWh costing me $70. 71, and 640 kWh the month before costing me a whopping $82. 69. Thatââ¬â¢s a lot for one person with only a TV and a computer running. So my goal was to lower those numbers as much as i can by the next billing cycle. Throughout all the research that was conducted, I decided to do exactly what my sources suggested. I set my thermostat to 77 degrees and left it there. I unplugged all of my electrical devices that were not in use and only plugged them in when I was ready to use them. The next billing cycle was up and I got my bill. For the cycle of March- April, I consumed a nice minimum of 364 kWh costing me only a small $52. 55 for that billing cycle. I was excited because my research project had turned out to be a success. Since the last bill, I saved 168 kWh. That was almost gave me $20 dollars in savings. In conclusion, I honestly feel guilty. Before all of this, I left my light on when I wasnââ¬â¢t using them, left my television on when I wasnââ¬â¢t watching it, and I even leave my office active when I wasnââ¬â¢t in my office. When I say active, I mean my printer stays on at all times as well my desktop and monitor. I just never turn off my computer. It almost seems as if Iââ¬â¢m harming the environment with my bad habits especially because I have a habit of leaving on my air conditioning because I either like my apartment freezing cold or blazing hot, depending on the weather and how I feel. The sources that I have introduced have plenty of reasons why people should strive to reduce our energy consumption so we can less impact the environment, ozone layer, and our utility bills.

Cuba by Liz Lochhead Essays
Cuba by Liz Lochhead Essays Cuba by Liz Lochhead Essay Cuba by Liz Lochhead Essay Essay Topic: Literature One of the moments I find most successful dramatically is the moment when Barbara Proctor, during a Poetry lesson, starts crying when she is told to read aloud the last stanza of the poem La Belle Dame sans Merci. The poem has such a powerful impact on her that she cannot contain her fear and anxiety about the situation the world is going through. La Belle Dame sans Merci seems to affect Barbara more than anything else in the story. This may be because of several reasons but, above all, the fact is that the poem deals with a delicate issue: death. This may be the powerful connection which deeply affects her, death and the nuclear threat. One of the poems possible interpretations is that there is a knight who falls in love with a fairy but, against his hope that the woman loves him too, he is betrayed by her, causing his death. Placed in Barbaras context, this may be thought as if Barbara really hopes that there is not going to be a war, but in the end her hopes are senseless and the war actually takes place; this is what might make her feel terribly scared and unable to control her fear. Another interpretation of the story might be that the knight, lost in thoughts about the mysterious lady, forgets to live the real world and sees nothing in his life but the fairy, who finally disappears from his life, or perhaps, he disappears from the world, consumed by his desire to live a fantasy life. This can be connected to Barbaras settings since probably she cannot see anything ahead of her only the war, and what consequences it might bring. This is showed previously on the play; when Barbara says if there is a next week, which is evidence that she cannot see the world in the distant future, without a war; her whole life seems to hang by the possibility of a nuclear war. The poem appears to make Barbara understand what death really is, as she can see a concrete example, though imaginary. One last interpretation of the story might be that the knight falls in love with somebody he cannot understand at all: in language strange she said and which he is unfamiliar with: took me to her elfin grot. Barbaras situation seems to be the opposite of this: she is afraid of something that he fully understands and is familiar with the consequences it might bring. It seems like the poem makes her realise how serious is the worlds situation, and how she might not get out alive. I find this moment very effective because it is an excellent way to place Barbaras inevitable outbreak in a way that the reader can understand what she is feeling at the moment, because it compares a fantastic tale and a solid reality which have one topic in common. If Barbara had started crying when, for instance, she was alone with Bernadette, it would not have the same effect, as the reader may not value her sudden fear. The fact that Barbara manages to express her fear to the whole class is also very shocking and effective at the same time, because she is able to break the ice and talk without worrying about what others may say, as it seems that they all feel the same, even the teacher looks as if he is scared. The peak of this shocking moment is when Barbara partially recovers and puts into words her fear: Im frightened. Im frightened there is going to be a war. The reader can imagine what the atmosphere of the class is: complete silence, paralysed students. It is very effective the fact that all the students are expecting to hear the teachers opinion, as all the previous teachers do not take sides in the situation, but give them a neutral point of view. The authors choice of including this particular poem is suitable for the storys plot and for the setting of the Cuban missile crisis. It places the real conflict in an imaginary situation and, although the tale can be interpreted in several ways, it is very much related to death, something which concerns Barbara, her classmates and the teacher, who does not seem to know what to do.
